Bhagavad Gita

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita was written more than 5000 years ago, and is an integral part of the epic Mahabharata. However, because of its relevance towards leading a holistic life, it has gained prominence over Mahabharata itself. It must be noted that Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is not a book but a section of Mahabharata wherein Bhagwan Shri Krishna gives a discourse to Arjuna, the greatest bow wielder of his time.

Unlike spiritual books, which recommend a world of renunciation and adoption of life of austerity and penance, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita helps understand how one can enrich her/his life by excelling in the field of her/his aptitude. It is about a holistic view to life that leads to happiness through practice of sequential and logical methods. Pursuit to Happiness, needs to convert knowledge into intellect, which is prescribed in this great discourse. It is said that the preaching of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is like an Ocean filled with priceless jewels. The more one dives deep into it, the more jewels one is bound to discover.

Every Shloka (Verse) of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita has its own prominence, and each time one reads, a new meaning emerges, which aptly suits the situation that one is in.

In corporate world, organizations are facing challenges with regard to Ownership, Leadership, Communication, Values, Speed, Integrity, Engagement, Seamlessness, Negotiation, Productivity, Lack of Initiative (inherent fear of things going wrong), Excellence in Execution, Relationship, Gap between Skill and Talent etc.

The gem that we have for over five thousand years in the form of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita has a solution to all the above challenges, provided one engages (works as prescribed).

The discourse starts when the mighty armies of the Kauravas and the Pandavas are facing each other in the battle field of Kurukshetra, and Bhagawan Shri Krishna is serving Arjuna as his charioteer. Arjuna requests Bhagwan to place the chariot in the middle of the battlefield to have a fair view of who he is going to fight. When the chariot arrives at the centre of the battlefield, Arjuna carefully gazes at the enemy camp, and finds his relatives, regarded elders, teachers and mentors are ready to fight against him. Mere sight of these people leaves Arjun totally deluded, and he starts to think, what will be achieved from this war? He thinks, “If I lose, I lose anyway. But if I win, even then I will lose so many of my near and dear ones.’ This delusion besieges his mind with innumerable questions, which start to torment his otherwise focussed mind –

– Why should I fight this war?
– Who am I fighting this war with?
– What will I achieve at the end of war?
– Will it be right to kill my near and dear ones?

Feeling aghast with the above thoughts, his body starts smouldering with high fever. His bow, the mighty Gandiva, falls off his hand. Feeling physically and emotionally weak, he sits down saying, he cannot think straight and that he cannot fight this war. This is when he surrenders himself to Bhagwan Shri Krishna, and requests him to let know what is to be done in a situation like this.

Through the discourse Bhagwan Shri Krishna keeps on drawing parallel to various aspects of how to lead a balanced and disciplined life, and how righteous duty becomes paramount towards success, eventually leading to happiness (aim of every life).

Righteous duties have been prescribed, and methods to put them in practice have also been enumerated by Bhagwan Shri Krishna.

In today’s life most of us are taking on the battlefield and are in the same state as that of Arjuna. We also need the mentoring of the Bhagwan to remain focussed, and do what is righteous to become more productive personally as well as professionally.
